LOS ANGELES— A press conference is planned today to flesh out details of the memorial service for Michael Jackson. It's set for Tuesday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Tickets will be free, and at least one city councilman is worried how they'll be distributed.


NAWA, AFGHANISTAN — The new offensive in southern Afghanistan to regain territory controlled by the Taliban has claimed its first U.S. Marine. Several other GIs were injured or wounded. Some 4,000 Marines are involved in the operation.


ISLAMABAD — A Taliban training facility has reportedly been hit by suspected American missiles in northwest Pakistan. Intelligence officials say 15 people were killed and 27 wounded. The Pakistani military is getting ready for its own offensive in the area.


ROME— The death toll has risen to 20 from a train explosion Monday in the Tuscany region of Italy. Some 15 other people are said to remain in serious condition. The train was carrying liquefied gas when it derailed and exploded, consuming nearby homes.


JUNEAU, ALASKA— An organization of newspaper columnists has picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich for its Sitting Duck Award. It's given to the newsmaker who the columnists think has been the most ridiculed in the U.S.
